An elevator EN 81 upgrade is a structured retrofit project addressing safety gaps identified through an assessment against EN 81-80 (rules for improving the safety of existing passenger and goods passenger lifts). EN 81-80 lists 74 potential hazards and recommends corrective measures. Common upgrade items include: fitting compliant door protection devices (light curtains), adding or upgrading buffers, installing reduced-stroke buffers, fitting unintended car movement protection (UCMP) devices, upgrading landing door interlocks, and improving hoistway lighting. The upgrade is typically phased by risk priority level assigned to each hazard. Notified Body involvement may be required for major safety component changes.
