EN 81-40 is the harmonised European standard covering stairlifts (also called stair platform lifts or stair chairs) designed to transport persons with limited mobility along staircases, both in private homes and public buildings. It specifies requirements for mechanical strength, drive systems, safety devices, maximum speed (not exceeding 0.15 m/s on inclined path), platform dimensions, handrails, controls, and electrical safety. The standard applies to both straight and curved stairlift installations. Equipment manufactured to EN 81-40 may be CE-marked under the Machinery Directive. Periodic inspection and maintenance requirements align with EN 13015. EN 81-40 was published in 2020 updating the earlier edition.
