EN 81-41 specifies safety requirements for vertical platform lifts (VPLs)—low-speed, compact lifts designed to transport persons with reduced mobility through one or two floors where a full passenger elevator is not practicable. VPLs are enclosed or partially enclosed and operate at rated speeds typically not exceeding 0.15 m/s. Key requirements include: structural strength, anti-fall devices, emergency lowering, door interlock, controls, and electrical safety. EN 81-41 harmonises under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, enabling CE marking.
