EN 81-28 (Remote alarm on passenger and goods passenger lifts) specifies requirements for the remote alarm system that allows passengers trapped in an elevator car to summon help via a two-way voice communication link to a continuously staffed monitoring centre. The standard requires the alarm to be powered for at least 1 hour from a battery backup independent of the main power supply, a visual and audible acknowledgement to the trapped passenger, and a response time of no more than 1 hour after alarm activation. EN 81-28 was adopted into EN 81-20 requirements for all new installations.
