The application of distributed ledger technology to elevator maintenance records, inspection certificates, and parts provenance to create tamper-proof audit trails.
Full Definition
Blockchain technology is being explored and piloted for elevator lifecycle management to address key challenges in the industry: maintaining tamper-proof records of maintenance activities, inspection certificates, and parts replacement history; verifying the provenance and authenticity of safety-critical components (preventing counterfeit parts entering the supply chain); enabling transparent audit trails for regulatory compliance; and facilitating multi-party data sharing between building owners, maintenance companies, inspectors, and regulators without a central trusted intermediary. In a blockchain implementation, each maintenance visit, component replacement, or inspection event is recorded as an immutable transaction on the distributed ledger. Smart contracts can automate compliance checks and trigger alerts when inspection certificates are about to expire. While still in early adoption as of 2025, blockchain for elevator asset management has been piloted by several technology companies and maintenance providers.
