The door zone (also called the door-opening zone or levelling zone) is defined in EN 81-20 as the region extending 0.20 m above and below the floor level. Within this zone the car door opening interlock can be released (car door contact can be bypassed) to allow door opening and the UCMP device is armed to detect any movement away from the landing. The door zone is sensed by a magnetic or optical vane-and-sensor system on the guide rail. A second, wider levelling zone (typically ±0.30 m) defines the range within which the levelling or re-levelling drive is permitted. When the car is within the levelling zone but outside the door zone, the controller can execute a levelling run at inspection speed to correct a drift without opening the doors first. The door zone position must be checked and adjusted during commissioning and after any work on the car top sensors or guide rail.
