The door restrictor (EN 81-20 clause 5.3.6) limits the opening of a landing door to a maximum of 50 mm when the elevator car is not at, or approximately at, the floor level. This prevents people from falling into the hoistway through an open landing door. The restrictor is typically a mechanical latch or a solenoid-operated bolt that is only released when the car enters the door zone. It supplements the landing door interlock, which prevents the drive from running with any door open. Retrofit door restrictors are required by EN 81-80 on existing installations that do not have this protection.
