The door hold open button (also called the door open extended button or accessibility dwell button) temporarily overrides the normal door timing to extend the dwell time beyond the standard value — typically 3–8 seconds for standard calls, extended to a maximum set in the controller for accessibility compliance. EN 81-70 (accessibility) recommends extended timing for disabled-user mode. Holding the button continuously keeps the door open until released, subject to a maximum hold time to prevent the car from being monopolised. The button must be clearly identified and within easy reach per accessibility guidelines. In destination dispatch systems, the hold button may additionally communicate to the dispatch system that the passenger has not yet boarded.
