Counterweight Tie Rod

Glossary › Counterweight Tie Rod

A threaded steel rod that clamps counterweight filler blocks together within the counterweight frame, preventing movement during elevator operation.

Full Definition
Counterweight tie rods are structural fastening elements that pass through the stacked filler blocks — typically cast iron or concrete — and are secured by nuts and lock-nuts at each end to the top and bottom crossmembers of the counterweight frame. They maintain the assembly's rigidity and prevent individual blocks from shifting or falling during normal operation and under seismic conditions. Proper torqueing and periodic inspection of tie rod nuts is required as vibration can cause loosening over time. EN 81-20 and seismic design codes specify minimum tie rod sizes and preload based on counterweight weight and rated speed. Tie rod condition is checked during major overhauls.
