Rail clips — also called rail fishplates or rail clamps — are bolted steel fittings that clamp the guide rail foot to the bracket plate. Unlike welding, clip fixing allows the rail to expand thermally along its length and permits fine lateral and depth adjustment during installation to achieve the required plumb accuracy. Each clip is tightened to a specified torque, and clip spacing is governed by the rail section size and rated car load. EN 81-20 defines the permissible rail deflection under load, which determines clip spacing and bracket stiffness requirements.
