Car Top Handrail: 700mm Height, 100mm Toe Board, 300N Force Resistance, 500mm Max Gap and Car Top Safe Working Zone

Car top handrails are mandatory safety provisions for working on the car roof under EN 81-20 Cl. 5.4 and form part of the safe working zone on the car top. Requirements: (1) The handrail must provide a secure grip at all positions where a person is required to stand or work on the car top; (2) Height of handrail: ≥700 mm (measured from the car top floor level); (3) Toe board (kick plate) at the base: ≥100 mm high, to prevent tools from being kicked off the edge; (4) The handrail system must not interfere with the safe clearances required between the car top and overhead structure (EN 81-20 overhead clearances); (5) The handrail must be able to withstand a force of ≥300 N applied in any direction; (6) Any gap in the handrail at the access point (where the mechanic steps onto the car top) must not exceed 500 mm in width. Car top handrails are typically L-shaped or U-shaped tubular steel structures welded or bolted to the car frame. The car top working area is also protected by the car top inspection panel (CTIP) which allows the mechanic to control movements while on the car roof. Car top handrails are inspected at commissioning and periodic inspection.
