The car top balustrade is a fixed or folding handrail system installed at the edges of the car top to prevent falls from height during inspection, maintenance, and repair work carried out on top of the elevator car. EN 81-20 defines minimum height (0.7 m on the far edge from the hoistway wall, 1.1 m on sides where a fall is possible), toe board dimensions, and intermediate rail requirements. The balustrade must be able to withstand the specified lateral forces without failure. Folding designs allow the balustrade to be lowered for passage through landing door openings on older or low-headroom installations.
