Car Top Inspection Station: EN 81-20 Requirements, Inspection Speed and Maintenance Applications

Glossary Car Top Inspection Station

A control station mounted on the elevator car roof enabling maintenance engineers to drive the car at inspection speed for safe overhead work.

Full Definition
The car top inspection station (CTIS) overrides normal elevator operation and allows an engineer on the car roof to drive at inspection speed ≤0.63 m/s (EN 81-20 §14.2.1). Operation requires simultaneous continuous-pressure activation of an enabling device and a direction button — releasing either stops the car immediately. A stop switch accessible from any position on the car roof is mandatory. When CTIS is active, all hall and car calls are inhibited. The station typically includes a 230 V maintenance socket and a work light holder. It is used for guide rail lubrication, rope and sheave condition assessment, car top cleaning, sensor adjustment, and corrective maintenance tasks.
