Car position indicators (CPI) provide real-time information on the car's location within the building. Modern indicators use LED or LCD dot-matrix or segmented displays to show the current floor number, with an arrow indicating direction (up/down). Auditory floor announcements — a chime, synthetic speech, or a recorded voice naming the floor — are required by EN 81-70 for accessible lifts to assist visually impaired passengers. The position data is derived from the elevator's absolute position encoder or a floor-selector cam-and-contact system in older installations. In destination dispatch systems, the car position indicator may additionally show the predicted arrival time or assigned car number. Landing indicators (hall position indicators) show the building population the position of every car in the group, aiding in deciding whether to call or wait. Display brightness must meet the minimum lux requirements of the car environment, typically ≥50 cd/m² for legibility under normal lighting.
