Car door gibs (also called door shoes, sill shoes, or sill guides) are replaceable wear inserts made from nylon, UHMW polyethylene, or PTFE that are pressed into or clipped onto the bottom edge of car door panels. They ride in the groove of the car door sill, keeping the door panel base aligned and preventing the bottom of the door from swinging inward or outward during travel. Worn gibs allow door panel misalignment, increase sill gap dimensions beyond EN 81-20 limits, and create noise. Replacement is one of the most common routine maintenance tasks — gibs are designed as consumable items and should be checked at every service visit. Correct gib material must be matched to the sill groove profile and door panel weight.
