Brake Adjustment: Setting Air Gap, Spring Force & Braking Torque

Glossary › Brake Adjustment

The maintenance procedure of setting the correct air gap, spring force, and braking torque of the elevator machine brake.

Full Definition
Brake adjustment is a critical maintenance task performed on the elevator traction machine or hydraulic pump motor brake to ensure it can hold the car and counterweight stationary and stop them within specification. Key parameters include: air gap between armature and magnet faces (typically 0.2–0.5 mm), spring pre-load for braking force, and lining wear. EN 81-20 requires the brake to hold 125% of the rated load and stop the car within specified deceleration limits. Adjustment is typically required every 6–12 months or after brake lining replacement. After adjustment, a static hold test and dynamic stopping test must be performed to verify compliance.
