VDI 4707: SEC Wh/kg per Start A–G Classes, Three Usage Profiles, VVVF Regeneration LED Auto-Off and DGNB Certification

Glossary › VDI 4707 (German Elevator Energy Efficiency Guideline)

A German engineering guideline published by the VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) that defines a method for assessing and classifying the energy efficiency of elevators into classes A to G, predating and complementary to ISO 25745, widely used in German-speaking countries and for European green building certifications.

Full Definition
VDI 4707:2009 (Lifts — Energy Efficiency) was one of the first systematic elevator energy efficiency frameworks, developed by German engineers before ISO 25745. Classification methodology: VDI 4707 classifies elevators based on specific energy consumption (SEC), calculated as: SEC = Annual energy consumption (Wh) / number of starts per year / rated load (kg). Classes: A (≤0.2 Wh/kg per start) through G (>10 Wh/kg per start) for medium-use application. VDI 4707 distinguishes between three usage profiles (utilisation intensity): standby-dominated use (e.g. residential, low-traffic), moderate use, and intensive use (e.g. office high-traffic) — recognising that energy use is dominated by standby consumption in low-traffic buildings. Key energy efficiency measures evaluated: (1) Drive: VVVF with regeneration rated; (2) Standby: LED lighting auto-off, ventilation auto-off after timeout, car light and fan power; (3) Control: sleep mode, standby mode energy consumption; (4) Drive efficiency class. Comparison with ISO 25745: VDI 4707 uses starts/rated load normalisation; ISO 25745 uses travel distance/rated load. Both provide A–G classes. VDI 4707 is commonly referenced in DGNB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen) building certification. A VDI 4707 energy assessment certificate can be obtained from an authorised assessor.
