Type examination (EU Module B) is the first stage of conformity assessment under the Lift Directive 2014/33/EU, in which the manufacturer submits technical documentation — design drawings, safety calculations, material specifications, and test results — to a Notified Body for review. The Notified Body evaluates whether the design of the safety component or complete lift system meets the Essential Safety Requirements (ESRs) of the Directive and the applicable harmonised standards (EN 81 series). On successful completion, an EC type-examination certificate is issued. The certificate must be referenced in the Declaration of Conformity and is valid for a defined period or until the design changes significantly. Type examination provides assurance that an untested design meets safety requirements before market placement.
