Template installation is a method used during elevator shaft preparation in which accurately fabricated templates are suspended plumb in the hoistway to mark the exact positions for anchor bolt holes, guide rail bracket fixing points, landing door sill supports, and other structural attachments. Templates are typically made from plywood or steel plate and are designed from the elevator manufacturer's hoistway drawing. Using templates ensures that all fixing positions are correct before drilling commences, preventing misalignment errors that are difficult and costly to correct later. Laser layout systems are increasingly replacing traditional templates but the principle of pre-positioning fixings from a certified layout tool remains the same.
