A hoistway survey is conducted before elevator installation, modernisation, or major component replacement to verify that the shaft conforms to the specified design intent. Survey activities include measuring overall pit depth, overhead clearance, shaft cross-section at each floor, door opening dimensions, guide rail bracket fixing points, beam loadings, and the condition of the hoistway walls and structure. In modernisation projects, the survey identifies deviations from original as-built drawings caused by building settlement, concrete shrinkage, or previous modifications. Survey findings are documented and used to produce the installation drawing set.
