Safety Gear Test Procedure: Verifying EN 81-50 Stopping Performance

Glossary › Safety Gear Test Procedure

The defined sequence of steps to test elevator safety gear engagement at rated speed, verifying deceleration and stopping performance.

Full Definition
The safety gear test procedure verifies that the safety gear correctly engages and stops the elevator car (or counterweight) within required deceleration limits when triggered by the overspeed governor. The test is performed with the car loaded to rated capacity (and in the upward direction for Type B safety gears in traction elevators). The overspeed governor rope is manually triggered or the car is driven to rated speed and the governor is mechanically tripped. Deceleration is measured or calculated from stopping distance and speed. EN 81-50 (tests) specifies the acceptance criteria: deceleration during stopping must not exceed 1g for instantaneous gears or defined limits for progressive gears. After the test, the safety gear, guide rails, and governor must be inspected and re-certified.
