Elevator push buttons are the primary passenger-interface devices. Car operating panel (COP) buttons register destination floor calls; landing call buttons register up or down directional calls. Modern buttons use illuminated legends (LED backlit) to confirm registration and extinguish upon answering the call. Button contacts are typically 24 V DC low-voltage dry contacts interfacing with the controller via wired harness or CAN bus. EN 81-20 clause 5.11.2 requires that buttons in the car operating panel include a door-open, door-close, and alarm button. Buttons must comply with accessibility standards (ISO 21542 and EN 81-70) for height (0.9–1.1 m AFF), contrast, and tactile markings (Braille or raised numerals). Vandal-resistant stainless-steel buttons are standard in public buildings. Capacitive touch buttons are increasingly used in premium installations.
