Overload protection uses load-measuring devices — strain gauges, load cells, or floor-switch systems — to compare the current car load against the rated capacity. When the load exceeds 100–110% of rated capacity, the controller inhibits door closing and departure, activates an audible chime or visual indicator, and may announce a voice message requesting passengers to exit. In traction elevators, overload protection also prevents motor overheating and rope slippage on the sheave. EN 81-20 requires the system to be tested at rated load plus 10% overload. The load sensor signal is also used for anti-nuisance call cancellation.
