Normal terminal stopping devices — typically cam-operated switches or floor selectors — cut the drive circuit to decelerate and stop the car at the highest and lowest served floors during normal operation. They prevent the car from overrunning the terminal floor under normal conditions. If the normal stopping device fails and the car continues, the final limit switch then acts as a backup. EN 81-20 requires both a normal and a final stopping device at each terminal, each acting independently. Regular testing during maintenance verifies correct activation position.
