Noise & Vibration Test: Measuring Elevator Ride Quality to ISO 18738

Glossary › Noise & Vibration Test

A measurement procedure assessing elevator car noise levels and vibration during normal operation against specified comfort standards.

Full Definition
Noise and vibration testing evaluates ride quality by measuring sound pressure level (dB(A)) inside the elevator car and car body acceleration (mg) during typical trips. Tests are conducted at rated speed on both up and down journeys with no load, half load, and full load. Vibration is measured in three axes (horizontal transverse, horizontal longitudinal, and vertical) using calibrated accelerometers. VDI 2057 and ISO 18738 provide the accepted measurement and evaluation methods. Typical acceptance targets for comfort-grade installations are ≤35 dB(A) noise and ≤15 mg horizontal vibration. Excessive noise may indicate guide shoe wear, rail surface defects, rope resonance, or machine bearing faults. Results form part of the commissioning and handover documentation.
