Elevator Commissioning: Pre-Commissioning Checks, Safety Device Tests, Load Testing and EN 81-20 Acceptance

Elevator commissioning is the final phase of installation before a new lift enters public service. The process typically includes: (1) Pre-commissioning checks — verify all mechanical installations are complete: guide rails aligned, car and counterweight assembled, ropes/belts spooled and terminated, buffer clearances measured, pit and headroom dimensions confirmed; (2) Electrical checks — insulation resistance test, earth continuity test, safety circuit continuity test (all door contacts, safety switches), phase sequence verification; (3) Slow-speed running — initial testing at low speed (inspection mode) to verify car travel, guide rail alignment, door operation, and safety device mechanical functions; (4) Speed and levelling commissioning — VVVF drive parameters tuned for rated speed, acceleration/deceleration ramps, and floor levelling accuracy (target ≤±5 mm); (5) Safety device tests — overspeed governor trip test, safety gear activation test, buffer tests, UCMP test where required; (6) Load testing — typically 100% rated load and 125% overload test for safety gear and buffer tests; (7) EN 81-20 acceptance tests — documented test schedule per Annex B of EN 81-20; (8) Handover documentation — test reports, as-installed drawings, maintenance manual, CE declaration (where applicable). The commissioning record forms part of the Technical File under the Lifts Directive.
