Glossary Motor Control Panel

A dedicated electrical enclosure housing the drive, contactors, protection relays, and safety circuits that control the elevator hoist motor.

Full Definition
The motor control panel (MCP) consolidates all electrical components required to start, stop, and protect the elevator traction motor. In older installations it contains star-delta or autotransformer starters, overload relays, and contactor banks. Modern MCPs integrate a variable-frequency drive (VFD) with motor protection, soft-start, and regenerative braking capability. Safety circuits — top and bottom final limits, overspeed detection, and door interlock verification — are also wired through the panel. The MCP is located in the machine room or, in MRL systems, in a dedicated controller cabinet. Access is restricted to authorised personnel, and the panel must be clearly labelled with circuit identification. Regular inspection checks insulation resistance, connection torque, and relay calibration.
