The rated load plate (also called the capacity plate or duty plate) is a statutory requirement for all passenger and goods passenger elevators. EN 81-20 requires it to be durably affixed inside the car in a clearly visible position. The plate must state: (1) the rated load in kilograms (e.g. 630 kg); (2) the maximum number of persons (calculated as rated load ÷ 75 kg per EN 81-20, e.g. 630 ÷ 75 = 8 persons); (3) the manufacturer's name and address; (4) the year of manufacture; (5) the serial number of the installation. Under EU Lifts Directive 2014/33/EU, the plate is part of the mandatory documentation permanently affixed to the installation. LOLER requires that the Safe Working Load (SWL) is clearly marked on every lift. The plate must be maintained in legible condition — illegible, missing, or incorrect plates are reportable defects at LOLER thorough examinations. For goods elevators, the load is also stated in tonnes or kg and the maximum floor loading in kN/m² if relevant.
