ISO 4190: International Standard for Elevator Dimensions & Planning

Glossary ISO 4190

An international standard defining installation dimensions, performance parameters, and planning guidelines for passenger and goods elevators.

Full Definition
ISO 4190 is a multi-part international standard published by ISO that establishes planning and dimensional requirements for electric passenger lifts (ISO 4190-1), goods lifts (ISO 4190-2), service lifts (ISO 4190-3), and accessibility (ISO 4190-5). Part 1 specifies car dimensions, door widths, hoistway sizes, and machine room sizes for standard load classes (from 320 kg to 5000 kg). It also provides guidance on the number of lifts required based on building population, number of floors, and handling capacity calculations. ISO 4190 is widely referenced in architectural and engineering specifications internationally, harmonised with EN 81-series in Europe.
