Elevator Hoistway Design: EN 81-20 Pit Depth, Overhead Height, Car and Counterweight Clearances and Structural Loads

Glossary › Hoistway Design (Elevator Shaft Design)

The structural engineering and dimensional specification of the elevator shaft, including pit depth, overhead height, hoistway width and depth, clearances between car/counterweight and hoistway walls, and openings for landing doors, all defined by EN 81-20 and the elevator manufacturer's layout drawings.

Full Definition
The hoistway (shaft, wellway, or lift well) is the vertical enclosure in the building through which the elevator car and counterweight travel. Key dimensional requirements per EN 81-20: (1) Pit depth — minimum 0.50 m (shallow pit) up to ≥1.10 m (preferred for engineer standing space); greater depth for buffer stroke allowances at high speed; (2) Overhead height — distance from the highest landing sill to the structural ceiling of the hoistway; must accommodate the full buffer strike stroke + car top clearance of ≥0.30 m; typically 4000–5000 mm above top landing floor level for speeds ≥1.0 m/s; (3) Hoistway plan dimensions — derived from car size + clearances: car to rear wall ≥50 mm, car to side wall ≥50 mm (≥25 mm on the door side); counterweight to rear wall ≥50 mm; clearance between car and counterweight ≥25 mm; (4) Structural openings — landing door opening widths and heights must be coordinated with the door type and car entrance; (5) Hoistway enclosure — EN 81-20 requires that the hoistway is enclosed by walls, floor, and ceiling of sufficient fire resistance (usually 60 or 120 minutes per building regulations); (6) Access — landing doors provide the only access for persons; no other openings except required inspection hatches; (7) Ventilation — EN 81-20 requires hoistway ventilation (top and bottom) to prevent heat buildup from the motor. Structural design: the hoistway must support the guide rail bracket loads, buffer reactions at the pit slab, and machine/controller loads for MRL systems.
