Guide rail joints are the mechanical connections between successive lengths of guide rail in the hoistway. Fish plates (splice plates) and bolts clamp the two rail ends together while a locating tongue ensures precise alignment. Joint quality is critical: misalignment greater than 0.5 mm (per EN 81-20) causes impact as the guide shoe passes, generating vibration and noise and accelerating shoe wear. Joints must be staggered between car and counterweight rails to avoid simultaneous impact. After installation, all joints are measured and shimmed to within alignment tolerances.
