Escalator Truss: Main Framework, Load Bearing & Civil Interface

Glossary › Escalator Truss

The main structural framework of an escalator that spans between floor levels and supports all internal components.

Full Definition
The escalator truss is a welded or bolted steel framework that forms the backbone of the entire escalator assembly, bridging the gap between the lower and upper landings. It carries the step chain track, drive machinery, handrail system, balustrade panels, and all electrical components. The truss must be engineered to handle static loads from the equipment weight and dynamic loads from passengers, plus any seismic or wind loads specified by the building code. Support points at each end transfer loads to the building structure via support angles or fixed bedplates. Truss geometry determines the inclination angle (typically 30° or 35°) and overall rise.
