EN 81-76:2011+A1:2019 (Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts — Particular applications for passenger and goods passenger lifts — Part 76: Evacuation of disabled persons using lifts) establishes requirements for lifts used to evacuate people who cannot use stairs during a building emergency. The standard defines a two-phase operation: Phase 1 — the lift responds to a fire recall signal and parks at a designated floor; Phase 2 — the lift is placed under control of an evacuation controller (typically managed by the fire service) to collect disabled persons from refuge areas. Key requirements: protected hoistway (fire-rated shaft enclosure); dedicated power supply (emergency or generator); two-way voice communication between car, landing call points and control station; and car capacity sufficient to accommodate a wheelchair. EN 81-76 complements EN 81-72 (firefighters lift) in comprehensive fire emergency planning. The lift must be distinctly marked with the evacuation lift symbol.
