EN 81-71 Vandal Resistance: Class I 2J/20J Residential, Class II 6J/30J Public, Class III 20J/60J Prisons Polycarbonate Stainless

EN 81-71:2018 (Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts — Particular applications for passenger and goods passenger lifts — Part 71: Vandal resistant lifts) defines three classes of vandal resistance: (1) Class I (Slight Risk): moderate misuse expected — lift buttons must resist single blows of 2 J, car panels resist 20 J; typical application: residential buildings, hotels; (2) Class II (Moderate Risk): heavy misuse expected — buttons resist 6 J, panels resist 30 J, car lighting fittings are impact-protected, control panels have covers or recessed features; typical application: public housing, shopping centres, car parks; (3) Class III (High Risk): extreme misuse and attempted destruction — buttons resist 20 J, panels resist 60 J, all fittings are anti-vandal grade, mirrors are polycarbonate or toughened glass, all fixings are concealed; typical application: prisons, secure facilities, high-crime areas. EN 81-71 specifies test methods using a pendulum impact test rig for panels and a hard-body impact test for buttons and controls. Key materials: stainless steel (brushed grade 316) for car interiors in high vandal-risk environments, polycarbonate instead of glass for mirrors, flush-mounted or protected light fittings, tamper-proof fasteners. The vandal resistance class is specified by the building owner/specifier and incorporated into the elevator contract specification.
