EN 81-44 (Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts — Special lifts for the transport of persons and goods — Part 44: Stairlifts) establishes the safety requirements for stairlifts installed on private residential staircases. The standard covers drive and control systems, seat and footrest design, safety devices (overspeed governor, obstruction sensors, end-of-track stopping), electrical safety, and inspection requirements.
