A matrix of LEDs or pixels used to show floor numbers, direction arrows, and messages on elevator indicator panels.
Full Definition
An elevator dot matrix display is an array of individually controllable LEDs or LCD sub-pixels arranged in a grid that forms alphanumeric characters and symbols for passenger information. Common configurations include 5×7 or 8×8 dot matrices per character cell. These displays are used in car operating panels, hall position indicators, and destination arrival indicators. They support custom character sets including Arabic numerals and Cyrillic for multilingual buildings. Dot matrix displays have largely been superseded by TFT LCD and OLED panels in premium installations but remain cost-effective for simple floor-number displays. Drive circuitry uses row-column multiplexing. Brightness must be adjusted for ambient light to remain legible. Maintenance includes periodic cleaning and checking for dead LED cells.
