Door open time (dwell time) is the period the elevator doors remain fully open at a landing, starting from the moment the doors reach the fully open position. It is adjustable in the controller to balance passenger convenience against trip time. EN 81-20 requires a minimum door open time that allows a person walking at 0.6 m/s to board safely. Separate timers may be set for car calls versus hall calls, for accessible settings, and for heavy-traffic periods. The door open time is automatically extended by door protection devices (light curtains, pressure edges) when a passenger is detected. Extended hold time can be programmed for accessible floor settings.
