The door bypass switch is a safety-critical maintenance tool that allows a qualified elevator engineer to override the door safety circuit during inspection work or when diagnosing a door interlock fault. When engaged, the car can be moved at reduced inspection speed with the landing or car doors partially or fully open. EN 81-20 imposes strict conditions: the switch must be key-operated or sealed, bypass mode must be visually indicated, maximum speed is reduced, and the bypass must be self-resetting (i.e., removed when the key or cover is replaced). Unauthorised use of a door bypass switch is a serious safety violation as it removes a critical line of passenger protection. After use, correct door interlock restoration must be verified before returning to normal service.
