Counterweight frame tie rods are the horizontal threaded rods that connect the two vertical stiles of the counterweight frame, maintaining the correct spacing and preventing frame distortion under load. They also position the counterweight filler weights at the correct height. Tie rods are fitted with nuts and locking nuts at each end and must be checked for tightness and corrosion at regular maintenance intervals. If filler weights shift inside the frame (loose tie rods), excessive vibration and noise during travel can result, and filler weights may become projectiles if the rod fails.
