A CEN technical report providing guidance on the design of machine-room-less (MRL) elevator installations under EN 81-20.
Full Definition
CEN/TR 81-11 is a technical report (not a normative standard) published by CEN to clarify how the requirements of EN 81-20 apply to machine-room-less (MRL) elevators, where the drive machine, controller, and maintenance access are located within the hoistway rather than in a separate machine room. The TR addresses specific topics such as: working space dimensions within the hoistway for maintenance, thermal management without a dedicated machine room, emergency rescue procedures for personnel accessing the machine area from the car top, and the position of the main switch and socket. As MRL elevators became the dominant installation type, the guidance in CEN/TR 81-11 became widely referenced in design and inspection practice.
