Car Top Inspection Panel: EN 81-20 Inspection Speed, Hold-to-Run, 0.30 m Clearance and Car Top Lighting

The Car Top Inspection Panel (CTIP), also called the car roof control panel or inspection box, is a mandatory safety device required by EN 81-20. Requirements: (1) Inspection speed — when the inspection control is activated, the car must be driven at ≤0.63 m/s (inspection speed) regardless of the normal rated speed; (2) Hold-to-run operation — the car only moves when a specific direction button (up or down) is continuously held; releasing the button immediately stops the car; (3) Stop device — a latching stop button that, when actuated, immediately cuts power to the drive and must be manually reset; (4) Priority over all other controls — CTIP has priority over car and hall calls; (5) EN 81-20 requires that the top-of-car clearance (distance from car top to lowest overhead obstruction) is ≥0.30 m when the car is at the highest landing with the inspection control active, to protect the person on top; (6) Top-of-car lighting — EN 81-20 requires a fixed light on top of the car providing ≥50 lux at car top level; (7) Socket outlet — a 230V socket outlet for maintenance tools is required on the car top. The CTIP is interlocked with the normal operation so that switching to inspection mode cancels all pending calls and prevents automatic movement.
