Car indicators may be discrete panel-mounted display modules (integrated into the COP or above the COP panel) or standalone indicator heads above the cabin entrance (transom position). Display technologies range from 7-segment LED displays (1–4 digit floor count) to TFT LCD panels showing full graphical floor indicators. Directional arrows are illuminated in the direction of travel and extinguished or reversed on direction change. In multi-indicator systems, the main cabin display is supplemented by a secondary indicator above the entrance visible on entering. For accessible lifts, EN 81-70 mandates audible floor announcements (synthesised voice) in addition to visual indicators. The car indicator connects to the elevator controller via CAN bus (modern) or direct 24 V signal wiring (traditional). In destination dispatch systems, the car indicator may also show the assigned destination floor and boarding zone.
