EN 81-70 requires a rear-wall mirror in accessible lifts to allow wheelchair users to see behind them when reversing, spanning from 900 mm above floor level to the cabin ceiling (full-width coverage). For standard passenger lifts, rear-wall mirrors are a common design feature that visually doubles the perceived cabin depth. Safety-backed mirrors (silver-backed glass with adhesive safety film per EN 12600 Class 1B1) are mandatory in public-access cabins to prevent injury from breakage. Frameless mirrors are bonded to the cabin wall using structural mirror adhesive systems; framed mirrors use concealed mechanical fixings. Polished stainless steel (BA or mirror finish, grade 304) provides a shatterproof alternative at reduced reflectivity. Anti-graffiti film is applied in high-vandalism environments. Mirror weight must be included in the cabin tare weight for counterweight calculations; large mirrors (1.0 m × 2.0 m, 6 mm glass) weigh approximately 30 kg.
