The auto-dialler is the outbound calling component of the elevator's emergency communication system, required by EN 81-20 and EN 81-28 (remote alarm on lifts). When a passenger presses the alarm button, the auto-dialler dials a pre-programmed number (alarm receiving centre, building manager, or maintenance company) and transmits an audio signal and identifier code identifying the specific elevator. If the first number is unavailable, the dialler redials or sequences through backup numbers. EN 81-28 specifies the requirements for the remote alarm system specifically, including the transmitted information (unique lift identifier, alarm type) and communication channel requirements. Regular auto-dialler tests are required and must be logged.
