The elevator intercom (also called car telephone or emergency communication system) is a mandatory safety device under EN 81-20 clause 5.5 that provides continuous, two-way voice contact between persons trapped in the elevator car and a permanently attended monitoring centre or emergency services. The system must be operable hands-free and function on a minimum of one hour of battery backup when mains power fails. Modern systems use VoIP or GSM modules and can dial multiple numbers in sequence if unanswered. Auto-dialler capability ensures that a trained rescue team or building operator is reachable at all times. Regular testing of the communication link is required under EN 13015 maintenance schedules.
