Travel Height: 2:1 Roping 2×Travel Length, Guide Rail 5m Sections, Compensation >30m, High-Rise >150m Rope Stretch and Aerodynamics

Travel height (also called rise or total travel) is the distance from the finished floor level of the bottom terminal landing to the finished floor level of the top terminal landing. It is one of the most basic specifications in any elevator project. Key design implications: (1) Rope length: for a 2:1 roping system, the suspension rope length = 2 × travel + machine room height + pit depth + safety factors; for 1:1 roping, rope length = travel + machine room height + pit; (2) Guide rails: the number of guide rail sections required is directly proportional to travel height — sections are typically 5 m long; (3) Compensation: for travels above approximately 30 m, rope compensation (compensation chains or ropes) is typically required to maintain a constant traction sheave load as the car and counterweight change relative position; (4) Control system: the floor selector (encoder-based or mechanical) must be able to address the required number of floors; (5) Long-travel high-rise elevators (>150 m) require special considerations for rope stretch, vibration, guide rail alignment, and aerodynamic effects in the hoistway; (6) Travel height also directly determines the amount of potential energy stored in the suspended masses — a factor in buffer and safety gear energy absorption calculations. For hydraulic elevators, travel is limited by the hydraulic jack extension (typically ≤20 m for direct-acting hydraulic, up to ~30 m with telescoping jacks).
