A contactless RFID or NFC reader that grants floor access based on credential validation.
Full Definition
An elevator smart card reader is an electronic access control device — typically a contactless RFID (ISO 14443 Mifare/DESFire) or NFC reader — integrated into the car operating panel or landing fixture that validates user credentials against an access control database and grants or denies the ability to select restricted floors. When a valid card is presented, the reader sends an authorisation signal to the elevator controller, enabling the destination floor button for a programmable dwell time (typically 5–30 seconds). Invalid or expired credentials generate a denial signal and may trigger an audit event in the access control system log. Smart card readers are used in hotels, hospitals, office buildings, and residential towers where floor access is restricted by user role, time of day, or emergency status. Integration with the elevator group controller is typically via Wiegand protocol (26-bit or 34-bit), RS-485, OSDP, or direct dry-contact output. The reader enclosure must be rated IP 43 minimum for car panel installation and IP 54 for landing installations in exposed locations. Modern NFC-capable systems also support smartphone-based virtual credentials via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Apple/Google Wallet passes, enabling mobile access management without physical card issuance. Firmware updates and access rule changes are managed remotely via the building access control server.
