An elevator shaft cable tray is a structural support system — typically a perforated steel channel, ladder tray, or wire mesh basket — installed along the hoistway wall to organise, route, and mechanically support both the fixed trailing portion of the travelling cable and any additional fixed hoistway wiring: travelling cable anchor brackets, compensation chain support hooks, lighting conduit, and controller-to-shaft junction wiring. Proper cable tray installation prevents wiring from contacting moving parts, minimises mechanical stress on cable jackets, and simplifies future cable replacement. EN 81-20 clause 13 requires that hoistway wiring be arranged so that it is protected against mechanical damage and does not restrict the movement of the car, counterweight, or doors. Cable trays in the hoistway must be rated for the temperature range of the installation location and must not support open wiring; all conductors are run in conduit or in the tray's raceway. Fire-rated cable trays with intumescent fill are required in shafts that also serve as smoke control corridors. Grounding continuity of metallic trays through the full hoistway height is mandated to ensure equipotential bonding. Cable tray fill ratios are limited to 40 % of cross-sectional area per EN 60364-5-52 to prevent heat accumulation from bundled cables.
