Seismic detection sensors — accelerometers or seismometers — monitor ground motion continuously. When vibration exceeds a preset threshold, seismic operation mode is triggered: the elevator completes its current journey at reduced speed, levels at the nearest floor, opens the doors to allow passenger egress, and then parks with doors closed awaiting inspection. Post-earthquake inspection by a qualified technician is mandatory before the lift returns to normal service. EN 81-77 specifies seismic categories and design requirements for lifts in seismic zones.
