A modernisation programme that brings an existing elevator into compliance with current safety standards.
Full Definition
An elevator safety upgrade is a structured modernisation intervention that identifies and rectifies safety deficiencies in an in-service elevator by replacing or retrofitting components to meet the requirements of current standards — primarily EN 81-20, EN 81-80 (Rules for improvement of safety of existing lifts), or national equivalents such as ГОСТ Р 55963 for the Russian Federation. EN 81-80 provides a risk-based assessment methodology: each identified deficiency is assessed against a list of hazards, and those rated as significant risk are assigned a priority for remediation. Typical safety upgrade scopes include: replacement of floor-level door locking devices with EN 81-20 compliant electromechanical locks; installation of a car door operator where none existed; addition of a car top inspection device; replacement of relay-based safety circuits with electronic safety modules; retrofit of new-generation progressive safety gears; installation of pit ladders and stop switches; and upgrading of buffer type for increased rated speed. A safety upgrade project requires engineering assessment, component type certification, installation by a qualified elevator contractor, and inspection and certification by a notified body or authorised inspection organisation before the elevator is returned to normal service. Documentation includes a revised technical file and updated declaration of conformity.
